A Co Down native, Gerard was persuaded to relocate to the hub of the Northwest (Claudy!) by his wife and four kids. Growing up in Newry, he was no stranger to Newry Swimming Pool as his Father gave nearly 40 years of service to it as a Fulltime Swimming Instructor, whilst also Coaching at Newry Amateur Swimming Club for a large proportion of that time. However, it was Lifesaving that was Gerard’s initial calling, enticing him out of the water and onto poolside - his Father had achieved a Lifetime Membership and Honorary Award from the Royal Lifesaving Society for his efforts and Gerard became a Lifesaving Teacher at the age of 16 - volunteering for Newry Lifesaving Club, Gerard put in a 10 year stint teaching Lifesupport, Lifesaving and Lifeguarding to hundreds of students. He also attained a Level2 Swimming Teachers Certificate with the STA and although studying Computer Science at College, used these credentials to gain valuable experiences in places such as France, North America and of course Newry Swimming Pool. Currently there are three of the Lundy offspring training with LASC and they regularly have to give Grandad Lundy full status updates on their swimming progress. "Thankfully Newry aren't in our AquaSprint League at the moment or there could be split loyalties"!
In Gerard, we have another budding triathlete, when he isn't ferrying his kids between Swimming, Running, Cycling, Football and Piano practice he attempts the odd triathlon. In 2014 he is planning his first Long-Distance Ironman event in Nottingham... Word has it that Swimming will be his hardest discipline!
We can forgive Gerard however for his loyal devotion to Arsenal FC - as one of his Newry neighbours was no other than Goal Keeping Supremo and still one of Arsenal’s Top 10 Greatest: Pat Jennings. If only Gerard was a year or five younger, he would have seen Pat switch allegiances and he could be supporting a good team like Tottenham.
